It’s been a question long asked by professionals in the energy sector; how can we make wind power a more attractive alternative? The potential of green or sustainable energy is considerable and the pay-off in terms of fossil fuel conservation and environmental preservation can’t be ignored. To further promote the advantages and opportunities that wind power presents, researchers have conceptualized a new source of wind power – the Dutch Windwheel.

  • The structure – Perhaps the greatest benefit of this design is its multi-functionality. The outer ring is made up of cabins on a rail system or giant coaster. This set-up will provide tourists with a panoramic view of the lovely city of Rotterdam and once constructed will be a major attraction, completely revamping the skyline.
  • Sustainability and green energy –The inner three dimensional ring is touted to be a wind-mill capable of converting wind energy into electricity without the need of moving parts or a loud turbine. As a result the maintenance of the system will be less demanding and it will be safer for the residents of Rotterdam as well as the inhabitants and tourists who will regularly use the Dutch Windwheel. Not only that, the waste matter generated by the residents of the 72 apartments will be used to produce biogas.
  • Space utility and economic driver – Over and above its achievements in terms of sustainability and construction, the Dutch Windwheel is also being hailed as a potential economic boost for the area. The set-up will support 72 apartments, a hotel with 160 rooms and a sky-view restaurant. These commercial draws are expected to fund much of the development and operations, in addition to furthering regional growth.

The Revolutionary Electrostatic Wind Energy Converter:

The use of the Electrostatic Wind Energy Converter (EWICON) makes it possible to convert wind energy into electricity without the need of turbines. Since the intermediate state of mechanical energy is disregarded, the efficiency of the EWICON is higher than conventional mills. In the Dutch Windwheel, rain water is collected and then charged with the help of electrodes and nozzles to create charged particles.

These water droplets are extremely tiny and thus are easily buffeted by a gust of wind. The wind is used to herd several million such droplets in the direction opposite to the electrical field’s force and eventually an insulated charger collects them, building up voltage. The voltage is appropriately tapped to generate a stream of electric current.

According to experts, the fact that the Windwheel is allowing residents to make use of its space and structure is an added boon. The proceeds from the sale of the apartments and the rent paid by guests will ensure that the upkeep of the operation is subsidized to a great extent.

We look forward to following the development of this new design concept and seeing where it goes in the future. As a trusted supplier of essential components for industry, Daemar products have a wide range of applications in the green energy sector. This project is an example of something we would be excited to contribute to.
